Does Octopus force you to pay by direct debit?

I only want to pay my exact balance but it seems Octupus forces you to use direct debit in the sign up process.
When I join Octopus, could I just cancel the direct debit and pay the bills by card?
Top Comment: Phone them up tomorrow and tell them you'd like to stop the 'direct debit' and that you wish to pay the exact amount the bill comes to each month. Which is 'variable debit' and Octopus should be fine with this as long as you have a smart meter or give meter readings from this point onwards.
